Protecting Your Home against Flood and Storm Damage

There are so many parts of a storm that can wreak havoc on one’s personal property. Heavy rains can bring large scale flooding. Gale force winds can rip roofs right off. Even lightning can cause some destruction. Dealing with storm damage can be a costly process, not to mention one fraught with mounds of paperwork. As such, it is better to take steps to protect one’s home from flood and storm damage before anything happens rather than deal with the after effects.

Warnings:

While it may be true that there are no 100% accurate methods for tracking storms, the technology isn’t that far off. It is therefore a very bad idea to think that a storm couldn’t possible hit or that it will veer off at the last moment. Always pay attention to warnings and take the necessary precautions. Remember that it is better to be over-prepared for a situation than under-prepared.

Environment:

Trees can be a beautiful and calming addition to one’s property. Unfortunately they can also be a liability in the case of a storm. Large trees run the risk of falling unto the home and even loose tree branches can become missiles in high winds. It is advisable to keep trees well trimmed at all times, especially if one lives in an area where there is a lot of storm activity.

Drainage:

One doesn’t need to live close to a river to experience flood damage during a storm. Something as simple as clogged drains can lead to a severe back up of water that can have costly consequences. Ensure that gutters are cleaned regularly and drains are kept clear of all debris. This should be a habit since any heavy rainfall can cause flooding. It’s also a good idea to install anti-flooding barriers under doors and re-enforce window rims.

Home Repairs:

A lot of times homeowners fail to make necessary repairs to their houses and this can exacerbate the damage caused by floods and storms. Roofs take a heavy beating from environmental conditions and cracks in the walls can lead to water seeping into the foundation. Homes should be regularly inspected to ensure that they are in optimal condition and any imperfections corrected as soon as possible.

Added Protection:

Windows are typically a weak spot when it comes to flying debris. Precautions need to be taken since this can open up one’s home to water damage as well under storm conditions. Every home within storm prone areas should have storm shutters installed. Even if one’s area doesn’t have frequent electrical activity, it is a safe practice to turn off appliances and stay off the phone lines during a storm as lightning can strike at any time. As added protection, consider investing in surge protectors.
