The days and weeks after a flood are usually almost if not more harrowing than experiencing the flood itself. Whether you choose to hire a water damage restoration company or pursue the cleanup on your own terms, the process can take time and be emotionally draining. Coping with both the hazards of a flooded home and the desire to salvage whatever valuables and property possible can turn into a real battle of wills between family members and even within your own mind.

There are many steps in the process of re-entering a home safely after a flood including getting clearance that there are no gas leaks and electrical hazards. You also have to make sure that the water is safe to drink and that there is no sewage line breakage so that it is safe to flush the toilet. With all this to do, there is still the time pressure counting down until the onset of mildew and mold.

Clearing the house of all traces of water and wetness is only the first of many clean-up steps. Depending on how much of the dwelling the flood affected, different methods will need to be used in order to save different items and valuables from being permanently ruined and/or contaminated.

In terms of flooring, if the water recedes or is pumped out of areas with linoleum or vinyl floor covering within a few days, the subfloor may avoid being completely ruined. However, if the plywood or hardwood subfloor is wet, you will probably need to remove the linoleum or vinyl and replace both layers.

In order to salvage wooden furniture that was submerged in flood water, take each piece outside and remove all dirt and debris using a hose if necessary and then take them back inside. If you leave them out in the sun to dry, they will warp. So, instead, take them inside to a room where they can dry slowly. Once they are dry, you will be able to re-glue if it is necessary.

For important papers, mementos and other documents, you will need to dry them slowly as well. The leaves of paper should be separated and books should be hung on end and pressed when partially dry. When you find books or papers that are especially wet, sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder on them to absorb the liquid. You may also use an iron carefully at the end of the process. Make sure it is on very low heat. Even if all these steps are taken, the papers may disintegrate much more rapidly than they would have otherwise. Photocopy any important documents so that you will at least be able to save the information that these documents and/or photographs hold for you.

If you live in Michigan or the surrounding area and have had your home or business damaged by fire, flood or a storm then you need to get your life back in order as soon as possible. The unexpected realization that your property has become damaged following an accident or a storm is one that is hard to come to terms with, but is also something that must be dealt with quickly so the damage does not become worse.

Dealing with restoration can be confusing, frustrating and rather time consuming. Perhaps the first thing you did was to grab the Yellow Pages and frantically look for a water and fire restoration company to call. There are many such companies in the greater Metro Detroit area, but instead of wasting precious time right after the disaster, it is best to first check with your insurance company to see if you are covered for the damage that has occurred. If so, your insurer may recommend a company to call.

No matter if you need help with a small extraction cleanup or a messy fire and water restoration, you can rest assured that there are at least a few Canton, Michigan restoration companies available, experienced and ready to come to your aide. It is best not to try to deal with a complicated water and fire restoration on your own because in order to properly clean up such an extensive mess takes special knowledge and equipment. Once any standing water has been removed from the affected area, the soot must be dealt with and hard-to-reach areas must be dried thoroughly so that harmful mold does not begin to grow.

The local Michigan Flood Damage repair or restoration company who you hire will arrive at your property with their well-trained team of highly qualified technicians to assess the damage and then get to work in cleaning it up. These professionals arrive with trucks equipped with heavy duty pumps, blowers, driers and dehumidifiers. They also have special chemicals with them that are used to thoroughly clean the affected floors, walls and ceilings so that the drying process can take place.

A top-notch Michigan fire, storm and flood restoration company will provide you with a very comprehensive service such as water extraction, cleaning, onsite/offsite storage, ozone treatment, content cleaning, carpet cleaning, debris removal and board ups. Choose a company that has been in business for several years and one that has a good reputation in the area.

Police and emergency workers were deluged with reports of flash floods in many parts of northeastern Indiana recently. Downtown Fort Wayne experienced street flooding in many locations with prompted police to issue warnings asking those living in the area to be cautious when traveling on area streets and roads when out driving. Motorists were also warned not to attempt to drive through flood water, even if it appears to be shallow. Sand bags were being made available to homeowners who live in high risk areas.

In Indianapolis and the surrounding area, over 7,000 customers were without power early this weekend after a string of heavy storms moved through the area. There were a total of seven severe storm warnings issued in the city and surrounding counties as storms kicked up 70 mile per hour winds Saturday evening. The driving winds picked up tree limbs and blew them into some homes in Morgan County and blown down trees knocked out power there.

The storm system which is moving through southern Indiana this weekend dumped as much as three inches of rain in the area by Saturday which prompted flash flood watches to be put into effect for low-lying or flood-prone areas. Flash flooding caused by slow moving thunderstorms is a common summertime hazard, transforming calm streams into raging rivers and normally dry, low lying areas into lakes in just a matter of a few short hours. The storm system that caused the deadly flash flooding in Arkansas and Texas earlier this week is what is causing the threat of flash floods in portions of the Ohio Valley as well as the mid-Atlantic region through the weekend.

These storms have the potential for producing a lot of rain very quickly and it surge in moisture poses a danger. The addition of more water to rivers can cause floods in those areas downstream, even where heavy rainfall did not occur. People all across Indiana area being warned to keep an ear on the weather reports – especially if spending the weekend outdoors in remote areas such as campgrounds as often time the heaviest rainfall often strikes overnight, which could trigger flash flooding.

Indiana has been fortunate so far this year when it comes to flooding although there is more rain on its way over the weekend. The Wabash River levels are higher than other rivers in the state but still short of flood stage. Heavy rain is expected but forecasters do not know how much will fall or where. Just two years ago, south central and western Indiana suffered one of the most damaging floods the Hoosier State has ever experienced. Three Indiana residents lost their lives to the storm that dumped nearly 11 inches in just seven hours.

Lifelong residents of southern Michigan know all too well that they have to live with the fact that this area in the state is prone to tornado activity. Throughout just the past few decades, the lower portion of Michigan has seen hundreds of tornadoes move through and do some very substantial damage. The most notorious twister in history is the Palm Sunday tornado of April 11th 1965 which killed fifteen, injured over 200 and left hundreds of people homeless.

The residents of southern Michigan just experienced what is yet another one for the history books this past weekend when a total of eight twisters tore through several communities, leaving behind a great deal of devastation and heartbreak. The small town of Dundee which is located in Monroe county just an half hour’s drive from Ann Arbor was the worst hit. An category F2 tornado ripped through this sleepy farming community and tore roofs off homes, sent barns and garages flying and had hundreds of locals terrified for the full thirteen minutes it was reported on the ground.

The tornado with wind speeds up to 135 miles per hour tore through the Dundee region, knocking over trees and power lines, ripping roofs off homes and sent at least eleven people to the hospital with injuries. The tornado touched down at just past 2 a.m. and tore a path of utter destruction five miles long and a half of a mile wide. The tornado was the result of a cold front colliding with warm and unstable air. A state of emergency was declared in Dundee Township as well as in the village of Dundee. Nearly 200 people who were staying at a nearby water park were force to evacuate. The group was taken to the junior high school in Dundee to wait out the storm.

One resident, Todd Taylor, reports that his whole house was shaking and that he and his family got out of bed and ran full speed through the dark to the safety of the basement. He could feel the pressure inside the home as the windows bowed inward before shattering. He described it as feeling like the whole house was ’shrinking’. Many residents describe that they felt like they were in a war zone with the horrible sounds of high winds and trees snapping and buildings and roofs collapsing in the pitch darkness around them as they cowered in bathrooms and basements.

Dundee residents are still trying to grasp what had happened to them last weekend. Some residents came out of their basements after the storm to find their garages and barns completely gone from the foundations. Hundreds of volunteers have come to Dundee to help the residents clean up the horrible mess left behind. Dundee natives are counting their blessings this week as no lives were lost and are hoping that this is the last ‘Big One’ for them.

Michigan’s lower peninsula has been getting pounded by heavy rains and thunderstorms this spring which are raising flood fears in the area. In the southwestern portion of the state, local rivers can rise quickly with three inches of new rain expected to fall over the next day or two.

A flood watch has been issued for a greater part of this portion of Michigan which will remain in effect at least through the weekend. The Sycamore Creek in Holt is expected to rise to over 7 ½ feet by Saturday. Flood stage is eight feet so there very well could be some flooding in low lying areas. Homeowners in the area are being told to take any necessary precautionary measures such as readying sandbags and checking to be sure their gutters and downspouts are cleared so as to avoid having rainwater seep into basements and first floor levels.

Metropolitan Detroit residents are being warned by storm watchers that more heavy rain is on the way which could cause flooding in certain parts of the city. Detroit Energy workers have been busy repairing many power outages in the city. It was estimated that nearly 10,000 homes and businesses in the area were left without power after the last large thunderstorm passed overhead.

If you are a resident of Michigan’s lower peninsula and live in a flood watch area, you should expect the worst, yet hope for the best. If your home is situated in a low lying area or near a river or creek, it is recommended that you move valuable items up and off basement floors or from the first floor level. This includes putting your major appliances up on blocks, removing electronics, clothing, important papers and other assets and taking them to the second floor or to someplace considered safe from the chance of becoming wet.

There is little worse than discovering that your home has been invaded by muddy and dirty floodwater. Not only can invasive water ruin items in your home, but it can also lead to the growth of dangerous mold if not removed quickly. If you r home does become flooded, you need to act fast in order to minimize the damage. If you have access to a sump pump be sure that you put it to work right away and then remove any items that have become wet. You will also need to bring in one or two dehumidifiers (depending upon the size of the affected area) so that moisture in the air is dried. This will prevent the possibility of mold taking hold and growing in damp places.

The Grand Ole Opry is a famous country music location that has showcased some of the top names in the business. The floods that occurred in Tennessee over the weekend has claimed the famous building and caused many to speculate on the treasures that may have been damaged inside.

Despite the flooding in the world famous venue, the shows scheduled to play at the location have been moved and will go on. The Grand Ole Opry does not plan to allow the change in venue or the flood to stop the tradition of music and shows for fans that have come out for the performances. While the location may have changed, the traditions and music will not.
The first floor of the Minnie Pearl building is under water and it is estimated that as much as six feet of water reached the Opry stage. There is tremendous concern over the condition of items contained in the building. No information is available on the condition of the Grand Ole Opry artifacts that may be damaged by the flood water. The building contains audio materials, costumes and instruments that are country music treasures.

The Opryland Hotel and Opry Mills Mall were also flooded and pose a significant economic disaster for the city. These sites are tremendous revenue builders for the city and their loss could be devastating to the region. The Opryland Hotel was evacuated and it could be as long as six months before the hotel can open its doors again. Cleanup in Nashville is underway and companies are working around the clock to help flood victims.

The Country Music Hall of Fame was also touched by the flood, but it has not suffered significant damage and the country music artifacts are safe within the building. The building has sustained some damage during the flood, however.
The recovery from the floods could take a great deal of time to complete. Repair for buildings, homes, roads and bridges damaged in the floods will also cost a significant amount of money. There have also been 31 confirmed dead in the region affected by the floods. The number of victims may increase as rescue workers move through the region helping those stranded by the flood waters.
Residents and visitors to the area have been stranded because of the shutdown of roads in and out of the region. The floods have also caused a financial strain for unemployed Tennessee workers who are unable to make their claims and face difficulty getting to an unemployment center in an area out of the region. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce had to shut down because of the floodwaters.

Any damage to somebody’s property, regardless of extent is referred to as property damage. These include, but are not limited to:

•	Damage to vehicle from a road accident
•	Damage to homes caused by flooding, earthquakes, and fires
•	Damage to residential or commercial properties caused by criminal acts
•	Damage to residential or commercial properties caused by negligence

Property damage can be expensive because you have to take into consideration materials and labor costs. Minor damages like dents and cracks are okay, but when you talk about replacements of pipes, walls, and interior fixtures, this could easily cost you thousands of dollars. How can you protect your property from damage? Are there ways to prevent these from occurring?

Common sense would tell you that for damages brought about by natural phenomena, there is nothing much you can do except to be prepared for it. Earthquakes for example cannot be prevented; thus, what you can do is to insure your property by availing of earthquake insurance. You may have to pay premium for it but it would certainly be worth your money if in case a strong earthquake does hit your area.

For other types of damage, especially those caused by criminal acts, we advise you to secure your property with the appropriate equipment such as security cameras, anti burglar alarm systems, and safes. This way you can keep the bad guys away, or at least, discourage them from even attempting to enter your property.

Other preventive measures you can follow are:

1.	Be conscious of fire safety. Make sure you have fire extinguishers in accessible areas. Companies should practice fire drills and locate fire exits in the building. Be responsible in turning off unused electric appliances and ensure proper use of these appliances.
2.	Report any problems with maintenance such as leaks, cracks, and faulty wirings. Leaks and cracks especially in walls and pipes can cause water damage, whereas faulty wirings can trigger fires.
3.	Keep properties locked and secure especially when nobody is around. Unauthorized entries are often the result of doors and cabinets left unsecured so it is best to avoid these from happening.

Property damage expenses can range from a few hundreds to thousands of dollars. When one becomes a victim of it, finances could be seriously affected, in addition to the emotional trouble that it brings. Make sure to always take preventive measures and where possible, get insurance coverage. There is good reason why insurances exist, you know.

East Coast residents had to brace themselves for days filled with heavy rain and flooding recently. In fact, in several areas, March was the wettest month in the history of their locations. The service of National Weather recently sent out flood advisories and warnings from Maine all the way to the Carolinas, as five to seven inches of rainwater were expected over the span of a few days. Some meteorologists even warned people of potential fatal situations near Rhode Island’s Pawtuxet River since it was expected to flood heavily there, as well. In the Northeast, the existing storm appeared to want to push through swollen riverbanks to make homeowners even more miserable than they already were after struggling to get out of their flooded basements during the earlier storms. This latest storm hit while the Northeast was still trying to recover from that recent storm that let out ten inches of rain and made several rivers rise, flooding basements all over their region. On the beaches of Long Island, there were worries about coastal flooding from high tides and the rain. To combat erosion, workers ended up trucking loads of sand over to the well-known state park’s eastern end.

The governor of Massachusetts alerted the National Guard while soldiers helped in filling up sandbags at a highway facility in case they had to stem waters from the flood. Officials also monitored some vulnerable state dams. In some states, such as New Jersey, roads were even closed up. Two inches of the rain fell on the state overnight and warnings of floods were posted for small streams and urban areas in some counties. The same system’s violent weather was to blame for the injuries that some people received and the damage that was made to a lot of homes in Davidson County of North Carolina. Although the rain dispersed in the end, some flood watches are still here to stay.

Until this year, the rainiest month of March ever recorded was in 1953 in Boston, where eleven inches of rain fell that month. The latest storm has already brought about almost ten inches of rain. Thankfully, no extremely strong winds came about, though. A lot of people are worried about what will happen if the rains keep damaging their old homes in the near or distant future. In some cases, if any more damage occurs, they will have to leave and live elsewhere. But where will they go? The problem is clearly very serious and the whole thing might soon become a real nightmare.

Most of us have needed to deal with flooding in the home at one time or another. Maybe we had a bad day with the washing machine and there is now water everywhere or were unlucky enough to have endured an unwelcome visit from Mother Nature. No matter what the cause this is something that needs to be dealt with while preventing as much damage to your belongings as possible. Here are a few tips to help you deal with flooding in the home.

-	The first thing you will want to do is to maintain your own safety. Water can be very dangerous if it comes in contact with electricity and it is possible to drown in only a few inches of the stuff. Make sure you turn of your electricity to the house; you should also turn off the water and gas supply as well.

-	You should assess the extent of your problem; dealing with a small flood from a defrosted freezer is a whole different ball game then managing a waist high flood from a local river that has burst its banks.

-	Depending on the extent of the flooding you may need to contact your insurer for advice; in other words if you could later need to make a claim you will need to contact them now. This will not only ensure that you do the correct things in regards to later making an insurance claim but your insurer is sure to have a lot of invaluable advice that you should follow. The insurer is really on your side in this because they don’t want to have to pay out any more money than they need to. If the insurer does not have the advice you need then they are sure to be able to put you in contact with people who can help you.

-	Move as many of your precious items away from the flood as you can. If the water appears to be spreading then you could move these items upstairs. Try and remove things like curtains for safe keeping.

-	Leave all doors open. A flood in your home can be really upsetting for you and your family, especially if it creates significant water damage. There are usually things you can do to limit the damage caused by this excess of water. The most important thing though is to not expose you or your family to any risks; your personal safety must come before saving belongings.

While wall-to-wall carpeting is very attractive in any home, it is something that must be cleaned on a regular basis in order to keep it good looking and to extend it’s longevity. Hiring a carpet cleaning company that will come into your home to clean your carpets professionally is great if you can afford to pay the often high prices asked, but many of us simply cannot afford this luxury every few months.

You can quite easily clean the carpeting in your home yourself and the results will match the job done by the professionals if you use the proper equipment. If you have a rental company in your area that rents equipment, give them a call and see if they rent out carpet cleaning machines. Often times certain large department and even grocery stores rent out carpet cleaners so ask around until you find a business that does.

You usually can rent a carpet cleaning machine on a per-day basis and can generally expect to pay between $30 and $40 for renting the machine overnight. If you have an average sized home, and have a day or two free, then this should be plenty of time to get the job done. Be sure to pick up carpet cleaning shampoo at the same time as the chemicals used in this solution are strong and effective at removing ground in dirt and stains.

Before beginning the steam-cleaning process, use your regular vacuum cleaner and give your carpets a thorough going-over. Even though the machine you rented is powerful, this will help to lift the strands of carpeting up prior to using the steam cleaner. A carpet cleaning machine comes with a receptacle for holding water. You must fill this tank up with warm water and the suggested amount of shampoo. The attached wand with the narrow plastic head contains two or three jets.

Once you turn the power on, hold the trigger on the handle down fully to make sure that water is being sprayed out of all of the jets. If not, simply clear the jets using a small piece of wire until the water comes gushing out. You can then start the cleaning. Simply hold down the trigger and run the apparatus across the carpeting in small areas. Once you have soaked a small area, release the trigger on the handle so that the water you just sprayed is sucked up and into the holding tank. Continue cleaning in this manner and feel free to go over heavy traffic areas twice and even three times. It is important to vacuum up as much moisture as you can with the machine to speed up the drying process.
